Ji Hyun Kim
Ji Hyun Kim started his career as a member of the Korean Youth Choir. After completing studies at Yonsei University in Seoul, he moved to Rome and participated in masterclasses with Jaume Aragall, Renato Bruson, Salvatore Fisichella, and Bonaldo Giaotti. Ji Hyun also trained at CNIPAL (Centre Nationale d’Insertion Professionnelle d’Artistes Lyriques) in Marseille and was a member of the Jette Parker Young Artist Programme for two years from 2010 at the Royal Opera in London.
Prizes include winning the Young Korean Singers’ Competition, the Nanpa Competition and the Schubert Song Competition in Korea and the Ottavio Ziino(Finalist), Giulietta Simionato (Second Prize), Wilhelm Stehnhammar (Special Prize), Les Azuriales (Second Prize) and Toulouse International Singing competitions (Special Prize) in Europe.
Opera roles include Tamino/’Die Zauberflöte’, Nemorino/’L’elisir d’amore’ and Don Curzio/’Le Nozze di Figaro’ at Yonsei University, Bastien/’Bastien und Bastienne’ at Sejong Arts Centre in Seoul, Faninal’s Major Domo/’Der Rosenkavalier’ (L’Opera de Marseille), Zweiter Priester and Erster geharnischter Mann/’Die Zauberflöte’ (L’Opera National de Bordeaux). At the Royal Opera Covent Garden, he has sung Erster Gefangener/’Fidelio’, Gastone/’La Traviata’, Helenus/’Les Troyens’, Conte di Libenskof/’Il Viaggio a Reims’, Roderigo/’Otello’ and Ruodi/’Guillaume Tell’.
Further roles include – Royal Opera, Covent Garden – cover Nadir/’Les Pecheurs des Perles’, Poisson/’Adriana Lecouvreur’, Conte Almaviva/’Il Barbiere di Siviglia’, Fenton/’Falstaff’, Tonio/’La Fille du Régiment’, Narciso/’Il Turco in Italia’, Iopas and Hylas/’Les Troyens’; Duca di Mantova/’Rigoletto’ (Scottish Opera).
His Oratorio roles include Obadiah ‘Elijah’ and Tenor in ‘Messiah’ (Gwang-Ju Art Center) and Tenor Mozart Requiem (L’Opera Teatre de Saint Etienne).
In concert, ‘Un Conte de Noël with CNIPAL at the opera houses of Avignon, Marseille and Toulon. He has sung with L’Orchestre Régional de Cannes PACA and in recital at the opera houses of Bordeaux, Toulon, Marseille and Avignon as well as at the Musique dans les vignes Cairanne.
In 2017 Ji Hyun made his debut at Wexford Festival Opera, singing Gasparo in Foroni’s ‘Margherita’ and Dorvil in ‘La scala di seta’. 2018 saw him appear with the Chelsea Opera Group and in the autumn he became a member of the Ensemble at the Royal Swedish Opera. This year he appeared twice as soloist with the Royal Philharmonic, in the Mozart Requiem and Messiah.
